Informed consent is required for New York patients. If abnormal, aPTT will reflex to immediate aPTT mixing studies. If reflex test is performed, additional charges/CPT code(s) may apply.

Specimen

Serum, plasma, and whole blood

Volume

Five 1-mL tubes of platelet-poor frozen citrated plasma and 5 mL whole blood and 2 mL frozen serum

Container

Blue-top (sodium citrate) tube citrated platelet-free plasma and lavender-top (EDTA) tube or yellow-top (ACD) tube and red-top tube or gel-barrier tube.

Storage Instructions

Freeze plasma or serum. Maintain whole blood at room temperature; stable for seven days.

Causes for Rejection

Noncitrated plasma; gross homolysis; presence of fibrin; clotted plasma; clotted whole blood samples if adequate DNA not obtained; frozen whole blood

Collection

Plasma/serum must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture and plasma centrifuged a second time before being placed in plastic transport tubes. Freeze within two hours and keep frozen until testing is performed.
